Literature Circle #1

The book Renegade written by Ted Dekker is a very age appropriate book for Middle School. It has
287 pages so it is a sizable chapter book. I was able to read "The Lost Books" series with my little sister

when she was in Middle School. She really was into the whole adventure and fantasy theme. This book is

about a character Billos that turns his back on everything that he was accustomed to. This concept brings the

ability to relate, adolescents may feel as if their world in is conflict.  He meets this character that is

mysterious Marsuvees Black and he gives him powers that he learns to deal with. This book takes you mind

to different places and times and I believe this is why it is so appealing to the younger generation. This book

has a lot of good vocabulary and has a very good plot line. Dekker also develops a great setting and the

story moves along very well. The story line is very dark at the beginning and begins to lighten as the story

develops. The other two books were equally as wonderful. I think that this is a great series to read for

pleasure and to develop your reading skills but not to use in your curriculum.

  1. I loved hearing your book talk in class. I think this is definitely a book that would get the older kids back into reading again. Any kids who struggled with reading when they were younger may avoid it when they reach junior high. But books like this can make them see what a joy reading can be. I think kids would like books like this because they can relate to the feelings of conflict and hopelessness, and they can find an escape from their world through reading.

  2. This sounds like an awesome series. I'm glad that you were able to read this with your younger sister, that's got to bring on a whole new dimension to reading. Personally, I love being able to talk about the books I've read and get opinions from others. It's amazing to see how one book can be interpreted differently by each person.

  3. This book sounds perfect for middle school! I like that it starts out dark, most 13 year olds like books with a little bit of edge to them! The trials and tribulations of this series really sound like something the older kids can relate to, and that will really grab their interests. It might not work into school curriculum but you can always suggest it on a summer reading list. The vocabulary might just be what kids need to retain reading skills and progress over the summer, so they aren't behind when they go back to school.
